2012 Continues to Show Growth in Amateur Radio Licensing
The first quarter of 2012 (January-March) saw a high
level of Amateur Radio license exam sessions, producing
an elevated influx of applications for new licensees.
According to ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, these
numbers outpaced the 2011 first quarter results by 30
percent. This uptick does not only apply to new applications;
there was a 6 percent increase in the number of upgrades,
too. “Statistics over the last 13 years reveal that
these are the highest numbers that we’ve ever seen for
the total number of US amateurs,” Somma said. “Now there
are more than 704,000 radio amateurs in the US.” Learn

Ham Radio in Hollywood: Blockbuster Movie Features
Morse Code, Homebrew Equipment -- and Sea Monsters!
In the movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Sean Anderson
(played by Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress
signal that comes from a mysterious island where no island
should exist. Sean decides to follow the signal with the
unwilling assistance from his stepfather Hank (played
by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson).
The movie opens in Dayton, Ohio with Sean on his motorcycle,
being chased by police officers. Sean had been caught
breaking in to a "satellite facility." When questioned
by Hank, Sean confesses that he had received a coded message
from his grandfather (played by Michael Caine), but his
equipment was too weak to copy it; he decided to go somewhere
where there were bigger antennas. The message -- a string
of one and two syllable words taken from the books of
Jules Verne -- makes no sense to Sean. Hank, a former
US Navy cryptographer, offers to help decode the message;
he feels this will be a good chance to bond with his stepson.
Immediately, Hank figures out that the message is really
in Morse code: each one syllable word is a "dit," while
each two syllable word is a "dah." Hank translates the
message, which gives clues to the location of the grandfather's
whereabouts. Read

Special callsigns for amateur radio stations during
2012
The Radio Society of Great Britain and Ofcom have reached
agreement on the optional use of special callsigns for
two significant events during 2012.
For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, all UK amateur stations
will have the option of applying for a variation to
their licence if they wish, to use a special prefix
for a five week period. This will add or substitute
the letter “Q” in the place of the Regional identifier
in the callsign.
For the period of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games,
a similar facility will exist for a seven week period,
using the letter “O”.
Both the above facilities will also be available to
Amateur Club licences.
Furthermore, calls in the series GB2012aaa will be available
for Special Event Stations relating to the Olympics
and licences will be issued for four “flagship” stations
using the prefix 2O12a where “O” is the letter O, and
a is a single letter relating to the location of the
station.
Further details of these arrangements are on the attached
summary, and administrative details will be issued by
Ofcom and the RSGB shortly.
In more detail:
The following facilities will be available to holders
of the following licences:
Amateur Foundation Licence
Amateur Intermediate Licence
Amateur Full Licence
Amateur Full (Club) Licence
Amateur Full (Reciprocal) Licence
Amateur Full (Temporary Reciprocal) Licence

▼ Yaesu’s Amateur Radio Division
Breaks with Motorola,
Changes Name to Yaesu Musen
After four years under the Motorola umbrella, Yaesu has
split from that company. According to Vertex Standard
President and Chief Executive Officer Jun Hasegawa, effective
January1, 2012, Motorola will keep the Vertex Standard
Land-Mobile Division, while the amateur, marine and air-band
will be under the Yaesu Musen banner. The new company
will be known as Yaesu USA here in the US.
“This reorganization will allow us to concentrate in amateur,
marine and air-band business, which will better leverage
and align the strengths of our entire business operation,”
Hasegawa said in a press release dated December 27. “We
believe that there is an exciting opportunity to evolve
our organization to meet the needs of the Amateur Radio,
Marine equipment and air band telecommunication industries
by continuing to provide specialized services and the
highest quality products.”
Hasegawa explained that the new company’s name will be
Yaesu Musen, “a name our business partners have been familiar
with for over 50 years. We are delighted to bring you
the legacy of trust, quality and solid customer service
that has always been associated with the Yaesu Musen company
name.”
While Yaesu Musen will have a new Japanese address, the
address and phone numbers -- as well as the US operations
and sales organization -- for Yaesu USA will not change.
Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, will remain in charge of
Yaesu USA’s sales division. −ARRL NEWS− 12/28/2011
