▼ Yaesu’s Amateur Radio Division
Breaks with Motorola,
Changes Name to Yaesu Musen
After four years under the Motorola umbrella, Yaesu has
split from that company. According to Vertex Standard
President and Chief Executive Officer Jun Hasegawa, effective
January1, 2012, Motorola will keep the Vertex Standard
Land-Mobile Division, while the amateur, marine and air-band
will be under the Yaesu Musen banner. The new company
will be known as Yaesu USA here in the US.
“This reorganization will allow us to concentrate in amateur,
marine and air-band business, which will better leverage
and align the strengths of our entire business operation,”
Hasegawa said in a press release dated December 27. “We
believe that there is an exciting opportunity to evolve
our organization to meet the needs of the Amateur Radio,
Marine equipment and air band telecommunication industries
by continuing to provide specialized services and the
highest quality products.”
Hasegawa explained that the new company’s name will be
Yaesu Musen, “a name our business partners have been familiar
with for over 50 years. We are delighted to bring you
the legacy of trust, quality and solid customer service
that has always been associated with the Yaesu Musen company
name.”
While Yaesu Musen will have a new Japanese address, the
address and phone numbers -- as well as the US operations
and sales organization -- for Yaesu USA will not change.
Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, will remain in charge of
Yaesu USA’s sales division. −ARRL NEWS− 12/28/2011
▼ Record Number of Freshmen Take Tech Exam at California
University
Almost 120 Cal Poly-SLO
freshmen electrical engineering students sat for
the Technician exam; 96 students passed the test.
[Marcel Stieber, AI6MS]
When 114 freshmen electrical engineering
students at California Polytechnic State University
in San Luis Obispo, California, gathered on Friday,
November 4 to take their Technician exam, they made
history.
Not only was the session one of the largest exam sessions
ever, it was the largest exam session sponsored by a
college Amateur Radio club and the largest exam session
ever held in San Luis Obispo County. After all the exams
were graded, 96 of the 114 students were brand new licensed
amateurs, joining the next generation of radio amateurs
in the US. Hosted by the Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club,
this exam session broke its previous record of 62 new
licensees, set earlier this year in October. These 96
new Amateur Radio operators will join more than 700,000
other hams in the US in providing volunteer and emergency
communications support for everything from local bike
rides and parades to global disaster relief.
As the third quarter of 2011 came to a close, ARRL VEC
Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, began calculating the number
of licensed Amateur Radio operators in the US, as well
as the number of new licensees. "At the end of September,
I saw that the number of hams in the US was high," she
said. "When I started comparing that number with other
years, I found that it was an all-time high." For the
first time, there are more than 700,000 radio amateurs
in the US. "When looking at the three current license
classes -- Technician, General and Amateur Extra --
these numbers are impressive," Somma explained. "The
number of Technicians peaked in March 2011 at 342,572,
while in September 2011, we saw both Generals and Extras
peak at 159,861 and 125,661, respectively. As new Technicians
earn their Amateur Radio licenses, and current Technician
licensees move on to General and Generals upgrade to
Extra, this can cause up-and-down fluctuations for these
totals.

If you have been on the HF bands lately, you may have
noticed that a number of new prefixes are in use by
stations in the Russian Federation. Here is a summary
of the changes recently adopted by the Russian telecommunication
authorities.
・Russian prefixes with the numeral 2 are no longer limited
to Kaliningradsk. Stations with RA2 and UA2-UI2 (with
F and K as the first letter in the suffix) are in Kaliningradsk;
otherwise, these prefixes will used in European Russia.
・Stations with the following prefixes are in European
Russia: R1, RA1-RZ1 (except RI1 as noted below), R2,
RB2-RZ2, R3-R7, RA3-RZ7, UA1 and UA3-UI7. Also, stations
with the prefixes R8, R9, RA8-RZ9 and UA8-UI9 (with
F, S, T, W or X as the first letter in the suffix) are
in European Russia.
・Except for those listed above, all stations with 8,
9 and 0 as the numeral are in Asiatic Russia.
・Russian Antarctic stations use temporary call signs
in the series RI1ANA-RI1ANZ and RI00ANT to RI99ANT.
・Franz Jozef Land stations use temporary call signs
RI1F, RI1FJ and RI1FJA-RI1FJZ.
・Malyj Visotskij island stations use temporary call
signs RI1M, RI1MV and RI1MVA-RI1MVZ.

ARRL VEC's, show off your support with a commemorative
challenge coin! This special keepsake honors the service
of ARRL Volunteer Examiners, who give so generously of
their time, energy and skill. The die-struck, 1-1/2 inch
brass coin depicts the color ARRL VEC logo on one side
in black and gold, gold color fill. Around the perimeter
of the VEC logo are the words ACCREDITATION, SERVICE
and INTEGRITY.
The other side of the coin includes the ARRL diamond logo
against a hemisphere of the world. Around the perimeter
are the words THE AMERICAN RADIO RELAY LEAGUE and
AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE. The coin is struck with
the year-of-issue, 2011. Five diamond shapes on the coin’s
head signify the five ARRL pillars: public service, advocacy,
education, technology and membership.
What is a Challenge Coin?
While there are many stories about the origin and history
of challenge coins (wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin),
these medals have been popular with organizations and
leagues for decades. Challenge coins are commonly issued
among the military and civil service organizations, including
police, fire and EMS officials.
These mementos are often used to commemorate a special
occasion or to show loyalty among individuals that share
pride and affinity for a particular service or agency.

Yaesu Temporarily Suspends Production After
Earthquake - All Vertex Standard employees and their
families are said to be safe.
Production of Yaesu radios at Vertex Standard's factory
in Fukushima, Japan, has been temporarily halted due
to earthquake damage.
In an open letter to the amateur radio community, Vertex
Standard CEO and President Jun Hasegawa expressed his
gratitude for the many "kind words and thoughts about
us during this difficult time." He reports that all
Vertex Standard employees and their families are OK,
although the company has not been able to reach its
many dealers and subcontractors located near the coast.
"We just hope that they are alive," he writes.
Hasegawa also reports that the Yaesu factory in Fukushima
suffered "minimal" damage from the earthquake but has
been temporarily shut down nonetheless. He says he expects
it to be back in normal operation within one to two
weeks and asks for everyone's understanding and cooperation.
At this time, there have been no public reports received
from any of the other Japanese amateur radio manufacturers.
